Iraq

I visited Iraq in December 2002, four months before the American invasion and the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime. The political climate was cold and my fellow Swede Hans Blix was investigating if there was any truth to the accusations of weapons of mass destruction.
Nevertheless the tense situation, I experienced ten days of warmth and hospitality without a single sign of hostility towards me as a Westerner. I was in fact astonished to see that the general mood was extremely good, lots of smiles everywhere, not only towards me but also when speaking to each other. Then again, I didn't go to the prisons of Saddam where I assume the mood was anything but cheerful...
